How Starlink Gave Me the Freedom to Roam (and Work!)

When I first swapped city life for the wilds of the countryside, I pictured endless days wandering through oak forests, quiet evenings by the fire, and a new, slower rhythm to life. What I didn’t picture was spending half those quiet evenings battling my internet connection, waiting hours for one single photograph to upload, or refreshing pages until I nearly wore out my mouse.

As a photographer and writer, my work depends on being able to share big, beautiful images and long stories with the world. But out in the vast countryside, it felt like I had more chance of spotting a unicorn than getting a stable connection.

Then one day, Starlink arrived and everything changed.

Suddenly, I could run my website, A Whiff of Wilderness, without driving to the nearest town to “borrow” a café’s Wi-Fi (and endure their questionable espresso). I could video call family and friends back in the UK without sounding like a broken Dalek. My blog posts uploaded in minutes instead of overnight.

But the real magic happened when I realised Starlink didn’t have to stay put at home. I could pack it into my camper van and take it on the road.

I’ve roamed from the rugged cliffs of Brittany to the rolling green hills of Asturias, across sunny Spanish beaches and up misty Cornish lanes. Wherever I stopped, I popped up my Starlink dish and boom, instant high-speed internet. I turned my van into a mobile creative studio, editing photos with the sea as my soundtrack and writing blogs surrounded by bird song.

It’s no exaggeration to say Starlink has given me a new kind of freedom. The freedom to live and work anywhere, to chase inspiration without worrying about how I’ll stay connected. It’s turned my life into one big open-air office, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Of course, there have been the occasional hiccups, a few moments when the dish did its little robot dance for longer than I liked. But considering the freedom and reliability it brings, I’d forgive it almost anything (except perhaps if it ever tried to pinch my last bacon sandwich).

Starlink hasn’t just been an internet service for me; it’s become a travel companion. It’s helped me keep my projects moving, stay in touch with the world, and share my adventures in real time.

So, to anyone out there dreaming of going off-grid but still needing to stay online: I can honestly say this has been one of the best decisions I’ve made. Now, if only it could also brew me a decent cup of coffee…
